This term is an exciting one! With the Garforth Arts Festival on the horizon, we have got lots of things to be getting on with… All of the Arts Live groups will be performing at some point during the festival so keep your ears to the ground…
Check out the 2011 festival lineup here www.garforthartsfestival.co.uk and buy your tickets now!!
Headlining this year are BILLY BRAGG and HUGH MASEKELA!
The Garforth Jazz Rock band were involved in an exciting event held at the Bradford Media museum on the 14th March. Radio Leeds invited the band to perform live as part of the Andrew Edwards show, which was broadcast at 3pm.
The young people were interviewed, performed 2 live numbers and Andrew Edwards also played 2 of the songs that were recorded with the Mzuvele High School choir during the recent trip to Durban. In total, the band and their story were featured for around 40 minutes from just after 3pm – even moving the presenter to tears with their music!
The whole feature was a joy to listen to and the students were a credit to themselves and to the Academy. If you missed it, please find the BBC iplayer link to the programme here. Make a cuppa, sit back, and enjoy!
Arts Live re-opens the week beginning 3rd Janurary! We’re really looking forward to seeing you all again!
NEW FOR 2011:
Streetdancing Wednesdays 5-6pm
The Saturday morning Streetdancing has proved so popular that we have extrended the classes to include a mid-week class!
The 17th of November was the official launch of Arts Live.It comprised of three separate performance and workshop areas, and ended with a sensational live fire show of epic proportions!
It was a night which saw the culmination of a week’s streetdance project with the 7 trust Primary Schools (Aberford C of E Primary School, St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, Green Lane Primary Academy, Strawberry Fields Primary School, Ninelands Primary School, Micklefield Primary School and East Garforth Primary School) – the Streetdance Spectacular!
With each group of pupils having only one streetdance workshop prior to the performance, this was an incredible demonstration of what can be done in such a short amount of time. The 136 participating pupils were absolutely fantastic, and led by the talented and highly-commended dancer Booma, they performed confidently and enthusiastically in front of a 300-strong audience.
The Garforth Academy Boys’ Dance Club were also on stage for the first time since the group began in September this year, performing a high-energy contemporary dance entitled Brixton Riot.
The Streetdance Spectacular was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and one pupil wrote: “it is the best thing I have ever done in my whole life!”
The night was also host to a Jools Holland style showcase of the talent already part of Arts Live, and was recorded by East Leeds FM. The Garforth Jazz Rock Band, Slania and the two Shiny Bands performed on stage alongside one another, and stunned the audience with the standard of their performances.
The night also saw the children’s’ Steel Pan group Panic Attack perform alongside the adult group Steel Crazy, with a chance for people to try out the pans themselves. This followed a Samba drumming workshop, and there was also a Streetdance workshop which was a huge success.
